Owing to the spread of the monkeypox virus, the authorities in New York City have declared a public health emergency, designating the city as "the epicentre" of the outbreak.

The mayor of the city, Mr. Eric Adams, and the health commissioner, Dr. Ashwin Vasan, made the statement on Saturday. They said that up to 1,50, 000 city residents could be at risk for infection. Officials can implement measures to prevent the spread by amending the city health code and issuing emergency directives as permitted by the proclamation. Governor Kathy Hochul of New York gave a state of disaster emergency in the previous two days, and the state health department referred to monkeypox as an "imminent threat to public health."

The WHO declared monkeypox a worldwide health emergency on July 23. According to CDC as of Friday, New York has 1,345 cases, followed by California with 799 cases. On July 25, San Francisco′s mayor proclaimed a state of emergency over the infections. (Times of India, Aug 1, 2022)
